How long does a long S.M.A.R.T. (SMART) test take?

Post by ShoutingMan »

I started a long S.M.A.R.T.(SMART) test in my F4-425, having no idea it would be so long. The 8TB drive completed in about 36 hrs. The 10 TB drive and 16TB drives are still testing.

About how long does a SMART test take? Is there a way to abort and do a short test?

Regarding the questions you raised:

1. How long does an extended S.M.A.R.T. test take?

An Extended (Long) test performs a complete surface read scan of every sector across the entire disk. The duration scales with capacity and drive speed (typically 1.5 to 2.5 hours per TB for mechanical HDDs under idle conditions):
  • 10TB drive: Typically 18–25 hours.
  • 16TB drive: Typically 28–40 hours.
Note: If the NAS is actively handling file transfers, background backups, or app read/write activity during the test, the disk firmware will automatically pause or throttle the background self-test to prioritize host I/O, which extends the overall completion time (e.g., your 8TB taking 36 hours).

2. Can you abort the test and switch to a short test?

Yes, you can abort an ongoing test at any time without risking data loss:
  • Go to Storage Manager > Disk > S.M.A.R.T., locate the drive currently running the test, and click Stop.
Once aborted, you can start a Quick Test, which tests the drive's mechanical and electrical components as well as critical sector ranges, completing in just 1–2 minutes.

Hope this helps!

Thanks :)

A 16TB drive finished up sometime last night, about 6 days duration. Two drives ongoing.
