The D5-300C drive indicator turns yellow/orange and the computer cannot recognize or access the hard drive.

It is recommended to replace the USB cable and try again.
You can try disassembling the device, cleaning the dust, and using an eraser to clean the gold fingers on the SATA backplane. (An electronic contact cleaner would be even better.)
